KUNZEA

 

K. ericoides                                                                                                          2-3 metres

A small to medium arching shrub, fine aromatic foliage, small white scented flowers in spring / summer. Bird attracting. Hardy in  both coastal and inland situations.

 

LEPTOSPERMUM

 

L. flavencens                                             TANTOON                                             2 to 3 metres

A hardy, small to medium shrub with creamy white flowers.  Will grow in shady soils and coastal areas.

 

L. juniperinum (continentale)                 PRICKLY TEA TREE                                       2 metres

A tough compact shrub for screening. Dark - green pointed leaves with 5 petalled white flowers and dark centres. Will grow in a wide range of soils from well drained to poorly drained soils in high rainfall areas.

 

L langinerum                                         WOOLLY   TEA TREE                           3 to 6 metres

Erect shrub with silky-hairy  grey  foliage. Large white flowers. Wide range of soils including poorly drained.

 

L. laevigatum                                        COASTAL   TEATREE                            5 to 7 metres

Useful low windbreak for sandy coastal soils.  Stands severe coastal exposure.  Bushy round shape. Bird attracting. Good screen.

 

L. myrsinoides                                        SILKY TEA TREE                              1.5m  X 1m

Useful as a lower storey in coastal plantations or as a  screening plant on its own. Frost tolerant and found locally. Adaptable to a range of soils from sandy to basalt.

 

  L. obovatum                                              RIVER TEA TREE                          2-5m X 1-3m

A frost tolerant large shrub or small graceful tree. Dark purple foliage with masses of small creamy lime flowers in late spring. Naturally found along watercourses and preferring moist well drained soils, it is quite adaptable  to a wide range of soil types.                                                                                                                                       

MELALEUCA

 

M. armillaris                                  BRACELET HONEY MYRTLE                          to 5 metres

Fast growing windbreak tree with fine leaved foliage.  Adapts to a wide range of soils and conditions. Excellent plant for establishing a  quick windbreak . Self seeding.

 

M. bracteata                                  WHITE CLOUD TREE                                     to 9 metres

Spreading, windbreak tree with masses of white flowers in spring, Suits medium rainfall areas and is drought resistant.

 

M. decussata                               CROSS-LEAF HONEY MYRTLE                     3 to 5 metres

Hardy, low tree with small mauve bottlebrush flowers. Suitable for a wide range of soils, Very adaptable and tough. Excellent bushy species in windbreaks. Frost hardy. Attracts nectar eating birds.

 

 

M. ericifolia                                   SWAMP PAPERBARK                                  3 to 5 metres

Useful low windbreak tree for poorly drained sites and saline coastal sand. Prefers medium to high rainfall. Very adaptable small tree. An asset to any inland or coastal plantation.

 

M. incana                                      GREY HONEY MYRTLE                               2 to 3 metres

Ornamental shrub with soft, grey drooping foliage and yellow flowers.  Suits heavy soils in medium to high rainfall areas. A good foliage plant which tolerates some degree of coastal exposure.

 

M. lanceolata                               MOONAH or BLACK TEATREE                     to 7 metres

Very hardy low shelter tree adaptable to a wide range of soils from wet to dry.  Recommended for inland sandy soils and exposed coastal areas.  Low to medium rainfall.  Salt tolerant and nectar bird attracting.

 

M. lateritia                               ROBIN RED BREAST                                        2 to 3 metres

Small to medium shrub, soft fine foliage, lustrous orange red flowers summer/autumn. Can be trimmed to form a hedge. In a garden situation the plant does well with a light prunning.

 

M. linariifolia                FLAX LEAF PAPERBARK/ SNOW IN SUMMER          3 to 8 metres

Hardy showy shrub with masses of white flowers in summer. Grows in most soils including heavy and wet.  Also suits moderate coastal situations.

 

M. nesophilla                               LAVENDER PAPERBARK                                 to 3 metres

Dense low tree hardy in most soils and medium to low rainfall areas.  Mauve pompom flowers in spring. Does well in coastal ares including 1st line coastal conditions. Can be clipped to  make a formal hedge.

 

M. stypheloides                           PRICKLY LEAF PAPERBARK                     6 to 10 metres

Attractive ornamental or windbreak tree suitable for poorly drained, brackish or saline soils. Dense cream bottlebrush flowers Dec. - Jan. Grows well in most areas and tolerates coastal exposure.
