PINUS
PINUS halpensis ALEPPO PINE 10 to 15 metres
A
drought resistant pine that does well where others won't grow. It likes limestone soils. It is an attractive tree that retains its
lower foliage which is a fresh green colour.
It is not considered a good
timber tree.
PINUS radiata
RADIATA PINE 30 to 40 metres
This
is a most common pine grown in plantations for its’ timber. It is a very adaptable tree with a neat appearance. Needs high rainfall for commercial growing.
We also grow a radiata variety from imported seed specifically for Christmas
tree plantations or agroforestry. We have three forms.
Pinus radiata – this is your normal form found in
most older plantations and wind breaks.
Pinus radiata GF19 – grown from imported NZ seed from
special seed orchards. Selected for it quicker
growth rate and form. Ideal for timber. Some Christmas tree growers use
this form and trim to shape.
Note – both the GF19 are at a premium
price because of royalties and importing cost etc.
